A day at Matera

Today we spent the day at Matera, an ancient city in Basilicata, where people have inhabited caves (sassi) for thousands of years. In the middle ages, over a hundred churches were built in the caves. The caves were inhabited until the 1950's when residents were relocated.

The visit through the old city was stunning and we finished the morning with a picnic in a park.
